GEOMORPHOLOGY
Classified as Local Protected Landscape, Rocha da Pena presents a remarkable topographic silhouette of the Aspiring Geopark landscape with its plateau culminating at an altitude of about 480 m and its cornice of about 2 km long, carved in Jurassic limestones. Located in the transition between the Serra and the Barrocal, Rocha da Pena corresponds to a residual structural relief, with an east-west alignment resulting from the interconnection of lithological, stratigraphic, tectonic, geomorphological, hydrological and climatic constraints.
This site covers terrains belonging to the Ancient Massif and the Algarve Basin, containing lithostratigraphic units with ages ranging from the top of the Lower Carboniferous to the Quaternary, although with two major stratigraphic gaps.
Rocha da Pena, with its karstic relief preserved over time, is thus revealed as a geomonument of recognised multidisciplinary interest, both from the point of view of its geodiversity and its biodiversity.
