Traditional Villages
This old village sought shelter on the southern slope of the Cerro do Penedo Grande, having developed around the Igreja Matriz(parish church) whose construction dates back to the 16th century. Its houses, built on the red sandstone rock, stretch from east to west, marking the border between the Serra and the Barrocal. The "Ruas de Cima", which once witnessed the daily life of the poet and educator João de Deus and the conspiracies of the absolutist agitator known as "Remexido", surprise the visitor with the contrast between the reddish ochre of the sandstone pavements and the white of the lime that covers the walls of the houses. A walk along its winding streets, between the parish church and the Chapel of S. Sebastião, allows you to catch a glimpse of some of the popular architecture that characterises the eminently rural character of this dynamic mountain village.
