Underwater Paleotsunamis - 1755 and 1969
Due to its size and impact, the 1755 tsunami has been studied, both at sea and on land, throughout the Iberian Peninsula, and in particular in the Algarve region. These studies and the diversity of methodologies used in them made it possible to determine the characteristics associated with tsunami deposits and their recognition, including the different phases of these extreme and destructive events that consist of the passage of the wave itself, the associated continental flooding, and the “backwash” waves, which retreat towards the sea loaded with continental and marine solid material.
In this location on the continental shelf, a sedimentary survey made it possible to verify not only the existence of a deposit associated with the 1755 tsunami but also a more recent one associated with the 1969 tsunami.
