Lagoa dos Salgados - 1755 Tsunami
Natural risks, whether associated with climate change or extreme events such as tsunamis, have also left marks on the landscape and influenced the evolution and presence of the human species in this territory. Lagoa dos Salgados preserves the deposits resulting from the tsunami caused by the 1755 earthquake.
These allow for the understanding of the amplitude and dynamics of this catastrophic event which, due to its size, destruction and global impact, constituted a landmark of conceptual change in the human vision of the world and planetary dynamics, being considered by many to be the moment of the birth of modern science, differentiated since then from dogmatic religious justifications for the explanation of natural phenomena.
