Paleontology and Paleoenvironment
The Parque Natural Marinho do Algarve - Pedra do Valado is part of the marine area on the coast of the Algarvensis Geopark and is one of the richest areas in biodiversity in the country and the largest coastal reef in the Algarve and among the largest in Portugal.
It comprises the area between the Alfanzina Lighthouse, western limit, and the Albufeira marina, eastern limit, and extends to the bathymetric limit of approximately 50 m, totaling an area of approximately 156 km2.
In Pedra do Valado, 889 of the 1294 species of fauna and flora existing on the Algarve coast were identified, 24 with protection status, highlighting the discovery of 45 new occurrences of species for Portugal and 12 new species for science that are not known elsewhere.
