“A History with many millions of years - from the Tethys Ocean to the barrocal of the Algarve“ – now available in English.
Celebrating the International Geodiversity Day, the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis and the Albufeira Municipality are very proud to announce the online release of the English version of the book “A History with many millions of years - from the Tethys Ocean to the barrocal of the Algarve”, in the Portuguese version: “Uma história com muitos milhões de anos - do oceano Thetys ao barrocal do Algarve".
The International Geodiversity Day is celebrated around the world as a way of promoting the various aspects of geodiversity and territorial sustainability.
This year, once again, the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis and the Albufeira Municipality joins these celebrations, now with the online release of the English version of the book " A History with many millions of years - from the Tethys Ocean to the barrocal of the Algarve.
Originally written in Portuguese and released a year ago, also by the celebrations of International Geodiversity Day, now the book takes another dimension, becoming available in English, which in some way internationalizes the Escarpão Plateau as a place of geodiversity and science.
About the book:
“A History with many millions of years - From the Tethys Ocean to the barrocal of the Algarve”, it’s a joint edition of the aspiring Algarvensis Geopark and the Municipality of Albufeira. It was written and illustrated by Delminda Moura and Sónia Oliveira, researchers from the Marine and Environmental Research Centre at the University of Algarve, with the field research collaboration of Luís Pereira, Coordinator for the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis candidature to the UNESCO Global Geopark Network at the Municipality of Albufeira. The scientific revision was done by Cristina Veiga-Pires, Scientific Coordinator of the aspiring Geoparque Algarvensis and Professor at the University of Algarve, and by Professor Doctor Nuno Pimentel, Scientific Coordinator of the aspiring Geoparque Oeste and Professor at the University of Lisbon, who also wrote the preface, in which he highlights that:
“This is an unusual work, as it seeks to tell the long geological history of a specific place following an approach that is both scientific and intended for dissemination. Scientific rigor is always present, in every detail about the organisms, paleoenvironments, ages or structures. But we can also feel a broader view, which seeks to talk about the geological “rules of the game”, its processes and the resulting materials.”
A book that tells the geological history of the Planalto do Escarpão (Escarpão Plateau) and its surroundings, now one of the 10 main geosites included in the candidacy of the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, but at the same time, it highlights the geological history of the Algarve basin, born millions of years ago in the Thetys Ocean. The interpretation of the landscape as we currently perceive it has not been forgotten and will contribute to a more attentive look at Barrocal do Algarve.
