Traditional Villages
Situated in the middle of the mountainous area between Lower Alentejo and the Algarve, in the transition between the Monchique and Caldeirão mountains, the village of S. Marcos da Serra is characterised by an irregular urban layout, consisting mainly of one-storey houses, rarely two-storey, and still retaining some traces of rurality, clearly evident in the various yards where the horticultural cultivation shows the practice of subsistence farming. Its location respects the natural slope of the land, with the top of the hill as a reference point, where the church was built in the 16th century. From the churchyard, one can enjoy the panoramic view of the village as well as the surrounding landscape, especially the valley of the Ribeira de Odelouca which winds its way along the eastern flank of the village. Especially on summer days, the coolness provided by the fountains located at the two main entrances is the ideal excuse for a moment's pause and contemplation.
