Located in the south of Portugal, in the centre of the Algarve region, it includes part of the municipalities of Loulé, Silves and Albufeira, in a total area of 1381 km2.

It is the only geopark south of the river Tejo in Portugal. The history of the territory starts about 350 million years ago, witnessing a geological history that tells the birth of mountain ranges and ancient seas, and extends from long before the continents had their present configuration, or even the dinosaurs exist, until today.
