HYDROGEOLOGY
The Benémola Spring, located in the Valley of the Ribeira de Menalva, is an oasis of freshness and one of the most significant freshwater springs within the Querença-Silves aquifer system. The true value of this Protected Landscape lies in the water that flows from multiple springs, notably "The Eye," "The Spring," and the Benémola Spring itself. Remarkably, these springs continue to provide water even during the summer months, sustaining the flow of the Ribeira da Fonte Menalva, which, along with the Ribeira das Mercês, contributes to the formation of the Ribeira de Algibre.
The water from these springs originates from karstic structures—natural formations created over time by the dissolution of limestone by water. These springs have historically influenced the lives of local inhabitants, enabling the construction of water mills, channels, waterwheels, and small dams. Additionally, other karstic features, including horizontally developed caves, can be found near this geological site.
The region is distinguished by its rich riparian biodiversity, which contrasts with the typical Mediterranean vegetation. This includes cork oaks, holm oaks, carob trees, and tamarisks growing over the greywackes and shales from the Carboniferous period (359–299 million years ago) and the limestones of the Lower Jurassic period (201-174 million years ago).
