Cross of Portugal
Cross in white limestone (non-existent in the Algarve), c. 3m high, representing on one side Christ crucified. In the other side there is a Pietà, or Lamentation over the dead Christ, with Our Lady holding her son's body.
Sculptural work characteristic of the late- gothic flamboyant form, the cross has wandered through various places in town and there is some consensus that it was offered to the city by King Manuel I, when the body of King João II was transferred from the Cathedral to the Batalha Monastery in 1499.
