Marine Protected Area
With one of its most biodiverse sites in the territory of the Algarvensis Geopark, Pedra do Valado is the largest shallow coastal rock reef in Portugal, benefiting from unique natural conditions that allow it to support a unique marine biodiversity.
It is one of the richest and most productive marine areas in the Algarve region, with many species of commercial interest and which supports many economic activities and ways of life that depend on its conservation.
Covering approximately 156km2, it stretches from the Alfanzina Lighthouse in the west to the Albufeira Marina in the east, encompassing the territories of Lagoa, Silves and Albufeira, up to a distance of around 50m from the coast. At Pedra do Valado, 889 species have been identified for the entire region, which corresponds to 70% of the total species identified between Lagos and Faro, with 45 new records for Portugal, and 12 new species for science.
On January 5, 2024, Council of Ministers Resolution no. 1/2024 approved the creation of the Algarve Reef Marine Natural Park - Pedra do Valado, which now has its own protection and conservation status.
