Benafim is located in the Algarvian Barrocal, about 19 km from Loulé - the council's seat. The simplicity of its people deserves to be highlighted and where inland tourism is already today a very important component. Benafim is a toponym of Arabic origin, in other times Ben Afon, meaning son of Afon. Tradition has it that this was the country house of the Moorish kings of Silves and Athaide de Oliveira claims that ruins of a monument were found in this village. Located in a transitional area between the Barrocal and the Algarve mountains, 2 kilometres from Benafim, the Rocha da Pena Local Protected Landscape, a classified area since 1993, a curious geological phenomenon with an altitude of 479m, offers excellent conditions for various sports activities, especially extreme sports, but its use is limited due to the natural values to be preserved. Due to its high altitude, from the top of this limestone massif it is possible to see a vast stretch of coastline, as well as the landscapes of the Algarve Barrocal, constituting a natural ex-libris that extends over an area of 637 hectares, where you can find cracks that have given rise to caves, some of which are quite big, formed over the years by the action of water on the limestone rock, as well as stone walls whose origins are still unknown. Of its traditions, uses and customs, the following stand out: In local handicrafts the most representative is the craft confection in the area of lace, embroidery and patchwork developed by a craftswoman based in Zimbral. On the 3rd Saturday of October, the festival in honour of N. Sra. da Glória( Our Lady of Glory), the patron saint of Benafim, takes place. The maize festival takes place in the month of August, evoking its gastronomic uses and the conviviality of the people in a period when emigrants usually return to their homeland on holiday. Benafim is crossed by the Via Algarviana, a pedestrian itinerary with a length of 240 km that runs through the interior of the Algarve, passing through several places, crossing a total of 9 municipalities and with the main objective of promoting the sustained development of the mountainous regions of the Algarve, through the enhancement of its cultural and environmental heritage, and the consolidation of small local economic initiatives.
