Geological History
Baleeira - Gypsum Whaleboat Rock
The Albufeira Diapir was formed by the injection of evaporite minerals along the East-West Baleeira and the North-South Albufeira faults. The evaporites, mainly gypsum, formed the sea cliffs at Baleeira Cove, while in the Orada, the evaporites dissolution formed a low flat area in fault contact with more resistant Upper and Middle Jurassic limestones.
