Karst
Serra da Picavessa, of high landscape value, constitutes an important morphological element in the Barrocal of Algarve.
It constitutes a typical karst landscape, with the occurrence of large karst depressions, elongated in the East-West or Northwest-Southeast directions, as a result of tectonic control, in addition to lapiás structures, some of large dimensions (megalapiás). The profusion of sinkholes is an expression of the importance of Serra da Picavessa in recharging aquifers.
The mountain range is composed of dolomites and dolomitic limestones from the Picavessa Formation, from the Lower Jurassic. These dolomitic facies are followed by calciclastic, micritic limestones with rare occurrences of corals and oolitic limestone benches. Below the geodesic vertex in Cerro da Picavessa, the existence of an outcrop of limestone breccia containing elements such as oolitic, pisolitic and dolomitic limestones stands out.
